Being Mortal: Honest Conversations About Aging and the End of Life

December 4, 2022 @ 10:00 am - 10:50 am

Ellen Carrington, a Columbia Theological Seminary (CTS) graduate with a master’s degree in Practical Theology, will lead us in conversation based on key concepts in the #1 New York Times Bestselling book, Being Mortal, by the surgeon and author Atul Gawande. We will explore the difficult but necessary questions and decisions surrounding the transition from independence to dependence that most mortals will face as we age. Class members will discuss issues ranging from assisted living and end-of-life care to questions around living our lives with purpose and meaning to the very end. Honest conversation and pastoral care will be deeply rooted in the discourse in our class sessions. On Dec. 4, CTS Pastoral Care theologian Dr. Melinda McGarrah Sharp and Grady Medical Ethicist Elizabeth Sivertsen will join us as we conclude this insightful series.
